Scam alert: residents beware

Scammers are taking aim at area residents and local law enforcement warns people to “be aware” and remember the following tips:

• Don’t believe your caller ID. Technology makes it easy for scammers to fake caller ID information.
• Don’t pay upfront for a promise. Someone might ask you to pay in advance. Consider how you pay. Credit cards have significant fraud protection built in, but some payment methods do not.
• Be skeptical about free trial offers.
• Don’t deposit a check and wire money back.
• If it is too good to be true, don’t believe it.
