2017 top stories: War on drugs escalates

A continued focus on drug-related and property crimes by the Perry Police Department (PPD) and Taylor County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) resulted in many headlines – and even more arrests – in 2017.

Dozens of meth-related arrests were made by local law enforcement this past year – including several involving trafficking amounts of the drug. Three weeks after taking office in January, Sheriff Wayne Padgett announced his department had “boots on the ground” in the war on drugs and had made six arrests for meth-related crimes. A steady string of search warrants, seizures and arrests would follow throughout the year.
