South Florida ring suspected in USPS outgoing mail theft

The Perry Police Department (PPD) has received numerous reports that checks, believed to have been were stolen when the outgoing mailboxes at the Perry Post Offie were burglarized, have been “washed” and re-written for outrageous sums (one as high as $48,000) – and subsequently cashed.

“If you mailed a check the weekend of Jan. 27-28, please contact your bank to see if it has been processed and for what amount. Then, come report it to us. We can file the initial report you’ll need for your bank,” Capt. Gene Franklin said. “We have been told they suspect that a ring out of South Florida is targeting rural post offices.”
