Class 7A Leon barely escaped with a 34-29 victory over Class 4A Taylor County in a wet, muddy and sloppy “Kickoff Classic” game Friday night in Tallahassee. The Lions had to sweat out a last-minute goal line stand as the Bulldogs threatened to score on four straight plays from Leon’s 10-yard line.

The pre-season game was played during a steady drizzle on a muddy field at Leon High, which contributed to the two teams combining for 11 fumbles (5 lost) and one interception. Both teams turned the ball over three times, but had numerous dropped snaps, errant passes and players losing their footing due to the wet conditions.
