Perry Primary School partnered with the Taylor County Extension Service this past school year to bring a gardening, nutrition and food preparation project to two first grade classes taught by Mrs. Kelli Brannen and Mrs. Laurie Lilliott. In-class instruction was offered and then a garden was planted with potatoes, green beans and squash. “The goal of the program was to help children develop an understanding of life and living processes, to experience the beauty and joy of growing and caring for plants, to understand human dependence on plants, and to improve science and social skills through garden-based learning,” Extension Agents Lori Wiggins and Abbey Tharpe said. At the end of the project, the crop was harvested, and vegetables were prepared for the students to enjoy.
