While most of Taylor County was experiencing normal summer weather, more than a foot of rain fell on Steinhatchee this past weekend producing significant flooding in and around the community, forcing residents to evacuate their homes and prompting the Taylor County Commission to declare a local state of emergency.
The excessive rainfall, which has been mostly isolated to the southeastern region of Taylor County, was the result of a stalled line of storms continuously dropping rain on the area, swelling the Steinhatchee River by 10 feet in just 48 hours. The same system produced flooding along the Gulf coast southward to Tampa.

The problems were compounded when the area received an additional two to four inches of rain Tuesday morning.
