Subdued and soft spoken, a handcuffed Garrett Arrowood looked strikingly young despite his 26 years as he stood before a judge Monday.

Behind him, the courtroom benches were sparsely filled with mothers and grandmothers. His own parents, Danny and Lisa Arrowood, sat surrounded by a group of friends.

With his attorney appearing by phone, Arrowood was alone at the podium facing Circuit Judge David Fina during the 2 p.m. hearing. He is charged with first degree capital murder for the June shooting death of his aunt, Shelly Strickland.

State Prosecutor James McCain said they were meeting with Strickland’s family to receive their input on whether or not to seek the death penalty.
