Some of my favorite popcorn action movies are from the 1990s, including “The Rock,” “Face/Off” and “Con Air,” all of which were released in either 1996 or 1997. When people these days wonder about Nicholas Cage, I point them to these movies, although that’s not really the point I’m trying to make here.
“Criminal,” which hit theaters last weekend, has a bit of a 90s throwback feel, and that’s probably because it was written by Douglas Cook and David Weisberg, who wrote “The Rock” and haven’t penned a single movie since 1999’s “Double Jeopardy.”
“Criminal” is an enjoyable R-rated, bloody action movie with a strong cast and an interesting story that has enough twists and turns to keep you engaged through its 117-minute runtime.
The film is rated R for strong violence and language throughout.
