Lightning sparks 1,000-acre forest fire in Tide Swamp

A lightning-caused forest fire that started Sunday afternoon in the Tide Swamp area of Taylor County has grown to about 1,000 acres, forestry officials reported Tuesday.

The fire grew from about 100 acres late Sunday to nearly 700 acres on Monday as crews battled the blaze on the ground as well as with an airplane and a water bucket-carrying helicopter, Division of Forestry Information Officer Leudie Bond said.
