    2016 GENERAL ELECTION UNOFFICIAL RESULTS

    In Tuesday’s General Election, three local incumbents won re-election while four other open seats were filled.

    Below are the unofficial results as reported by the Taylor County Elections Office and do not include provisional ballots. According to Supervisor of Elections Dana Southerland, she expected there to be around 12 provisional ballots, which will be counted Friday.

    Wayne Padgett is new sheriff

    Former deputy and local businessman Wayne Padgett (R) held off four challengers to win the top law enforcement office in the county.

    The sheriff-elect pulled in almost half of the total 9,310 votes cast in the race—3,873 (41.60 percent).

    Democratic candidate Clay Parker was a near second with 3,513 votes (37.73 percent).

    Roy Dennis Woods (NPA) finished third with 1,387 votes (14.90 percent).

    Danny McLeod (NPA) trailed with 496 votes (5.33 percent) and Kelly Blaske came in a distant last with 41 votes (.44 percent).

    Ratiff retains seat

    Property Appraiser Bruce A. Ratliff (D) garnered more than 50 percent of the ballots cast in Tuesday’s election to win a third term in office: 5,443 votes (59.59 percent).

    Challenger James K. McHargue (R) received 3,691 votes (40.41 percent).

    Murphy wins 7th term

    Longtime Clerk of Court Annie Mae Murphy (D) won a seventh consecutive term in office Tuesday, receiving 60.56 percent of the total ballots cast (5,584).

    Political newcomer Calvin Cone received 3,636 votes (39.44 percent).

    Glover will be next superintendent of schools

    School Board Member Danny Glover Jr. will be Taylor County’s next superintendent of schools, defeating fellow challenger Daryll Gunter to succeed Paul Dyal, who is retiring.

    Glover secured 70.71 percent of the vote (6,365 votes) during Tuesday’s General Election, compared to Gunter’s 29.29 percent (2,637 votes).

    Dyal announced earlier this year he was retiring after two terms in office.

    Russell wins District 3 commission seat

    Frank Russell is returning to the Taylor County Commission after he bested four other challengers for the District 3 seat during Tuesday’s election.

    Russell picked up 1,149 votes (44.06 percent), outpacing Sean Andrew Murphy with 719 votes (27.57 percent), Lonnie A. Houck Jr. with 486 votes (18.63 percent), Eddie Cullaro with 161 votes (6.17 percent) and James N. Cruse with 93 votes (3.57 percent).

    Russell will replace Commissioner Jody DeVane, whom Russell defeated in the August primary election.

    Demps secures District 5 commission seat

    Former Perry mayor Thomas Demps will succeed County Commissioner Pat Patterson for her District 5 seat.

    Demps won 62.97 percent of the vote (840 votes), defeating fellow challenger Junior Dice, who had 37.03 percent (494 votes).

    Patterson announced earlier this year she was retiring at the end of her current term after 16 years on the commission.

    Mathis joins school board

    Jeannie Mathis won a place on the Taylor County School Board, defeating Valena Reed Driggers 53.51 percent to 46.49 percent for the District 3 seat.

    Mathis won 1,319 votes compared to Driggers’ 1,146 votes. She will replace Darrell Whiddon, who announced his retirement earlier this year.
