Review: Story issues hard to ignore in ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’

Veteran “Star Trek” fans and new ones alike have been eagerly anticipating director J.J. Abrams’ sequel, the ominously titled “Star Trek Into Darkness,”  to see just what he and writers Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof would do next.

Having now seen the new film, I can say Abrams has a firm grasp on his visual presentation of the “Star Trek” universe, building off the themes and concepts he and the crew developed for the first film. Additionally, while the cast had the unenviable task of jumping into such well-recognized roles as these, they once again feel entirely at home in their personas and should be commended from top to bottom.

Unfortunately, while “Star Trek,” from its earliest days, has been known for telling intellectual stories through the medium of science fiction, the story for “Star Trek Into Darkness” seems to have been given the least amount of attention. Plot holes large enough to fly a starship through combined with muddled motivations for the primary villain provide problems that simply can’t be overlooked as the movie limps to its conclusion.

The film is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi action and violence.
