James Washington Sr., 89, of Perry, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2018. He was born in Perry to Crawford and Agnes Hampton Washington.
James graduated from Jerkins High School where he played varsity football, basketball and trombone. He served as the first African American juvenile probation officer for the courts of Taylor County. James also honorably served our country in the U.S. Army, spending a tour of duty in Germany during the Korean War; he was honorably discharged in 1952. He was a member of Springhill Missionary Baptist Church where he served as the superintendent of Sunday school for more than 60 years.
James was preceded in death by: His parents, Crawford and Agnes Hampton Washington; and his wife, Bertha Lee Washington.
He is survived by: his sons, James Washington Jr. of Bogart, Ga., and Kenneth Washington Sr., of Destoto, Tx.; daughters, Wylene Washington of Tampa, Trevita Willis of Temple Terrace, and Lavota Washington of Tampa; grandchildren, Kamala Lawrence, Jamares Washington, Kenneth Washington II, Shatrela Washington-Hubbard, Brittonie Wright, Donald Beck, Kalah Washington, Justin Washington, and Kendall Gayle Washington; and great-grandchildren, Jaron Washington-Thomas, Davani Beck, Jordyn Washington, Kamron Lawrence, Kamden Lawrence, Jaslyn Washington, Eric Wright II, Kamaria Lawrence, Jazariah Hubbard, Shamaiyah Hubbard, and Austin Wright.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 13, at 1 p.m. at Antioch M.B. Church in Perry. Internment will follow at Springhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends today (Friday) from 5-7 p.m. at Springhill Baptist Church in Perry.
