In 1973, John Paul Getty III, then just 16 years old, was kidnapped off the streets of Paris. The event made news around the world because his grandfather, John Paul Getty, was not only the richest man in the world, the oil baron was the richest man in the history of the world. Despite his wealth, however, the elder Getty refused to pay the kidnappers’ ransom demands, leading to some unfortunate circumstances for his grandson.
Retelling these events is the new film, “All the Money in the World,” directed by Ridley Scott and starring Christopher Plummer (“The Man Who Invented Christmas”) as the elder Getty. The film is superbly produced and even better acted, with the main cast also including Michelle Williams (“Manchester by the Sea”) and Mark Wahlberg (“Patriots Day”).
