‘The Post’ is an excellent film about journalism and the role of the press

If there was an all-too-common occurrence with movies in 2017, it was projects with accomplished directors and stellar casts turning into disasters, including “The Circle,” “The Snowman” and “Downsizing.” But a film directed by Steven Spielberg (“Bridge of Spies”) and featuring the first true collaboration between heavyweights Tom Hanks (“Sully”) and Meryl Streep (“Florence Foster Jenkins”) would surely break that trend, right?

Fortunately “The Post” does just that. It is a strong, well-made film with some great performances, although admittedly, I didn’t find myself as enamored with the project as many seem to be. By that I mean, it’s probably in my top 20 films of 2017 rather than my top 10 (considering I’ve seen more than 90 movies from 2017, that still saying a lot).
