It is through faith in God, love of family and friends and an unwavering hope for the future that the Taylor County coastal community has found the strength to overcome the devastation and tragedy of the 1993 “Storm of the Century” to rebuild their homes and their lives.
In the early-morning hours of March 13, 1993 — 25 years ago Tuesday — residents all along Taylor County’s coast awoke to find homes floating down roads, pushed by hurricane-force winds. Wind-driven waves created an estimated 12- to 13-foot high storm surge that slammed into residential structures, snapping pilings and dislodging homes.
