I’ve said many times before that I’m not a huge fan of horror films. It’s just not a genre that I gravitate toward when selecting a movie to watch. But, my friend and increasingly frequent movie-watching partner really wanted to see “A Quiet Place,” and I told her I’d go see it as long as I didn’t have to go by myself.
It is not an in-your-face horror film filled with jump scares and gore, instead it plays the long game by establishing early on a world of tension-filled dread and plucks those strings all the way to the end. As a non-fan of the genre, these are the kinds of horror films I tend to like, and we both left this one having mostly enjoyed it (me more so than her).
Where we felt the film suffers is in its development of the characters, who all play their designated roles but never receive the level of development necessary to make us truly care if they lived or died outside of the usual reaction to root for characters who find themselves in dire situations in movies.
