Back in 2002, a small, indie comedy hit theaters with little fanfare, but left a huge mark on both me and my friends. It’s a comedy that I can still quote word-for-word despite having not seen it in more than a decade. It was crude. It was irreverent. It was responsible for years of people being left confused when others said “meow” instead of “now” to them. Of course, I’m talking about “Super Troopers,” a film from the comedy troupe Broken Lizard, about a group of misfit Vermont Highway Patrol troopers who roamed their highways in search of both lawbreakers and a bit of fun.
Now, after 16 years waiting for a sequel and a successful crowd-funding campaign, we finally have “Super Troopers 2,” bringing back all of our favorite characters as they face new challenges, new foes and even more liters of cola. Last week, I rewatched the original and was pleasantly surprised just how well it holds up after so much time.
There have been quite a few long-developing comedy sequels to hit theaters over the past several years, and very few of them have amounted to anything more than broken dreams and silent theaters, including “Dumb and Dumber To” and “Zoolander 2.” Fortunately, I’m here to report that “Super Troopers 2” is not one of these. While not as good as the original, it has the spirit, and more importantly the laughs, to make this a worthy sequel.
