    Thelma Dorman Slaughter

    Thelma Dorman Slaughter, 91, a retired homemaker, died on Friday, June 8, 2018, in Mayo after a lengthy illness.

    Thelma was the first-born of the late John Benjamin and Emily (Hunter) Dorman. She was born near Perry in 1927 and grew up south of town. While still in school, she was employed by Friedman’s Dry Goods Store from 1944-1946. She graduated Taylor County High School in 1946. Thereafter, she worked for Bloodworth’s Sundries, 1946 to 1951, and Piggly-Wiggly grocery store, 1951 to 1955. About 1950, she toured the mid-west and west, including Yellowstone National Park.

    In 1955 in Indiana, she married William Lawton Slaughter, also from Perry. For the first eight years of their marriage, they lived in Kentucky, Michigan, Texas, Pennsylvania and Virginia. They settled in the suburbs of Detroit and spent many years there as her husband worked as a construction millwright. They and their son Ronny, moved to Perry first in 1973, and again in 1980 when her husband retired. She was employed in 1974 in the cafeteria of Taylor County High School.

    She is survived by: one son, Ronny, of Perry, who took care of her for many years; one step-son, William G. Slaughter, of San Antonio, Texas; and three nieces.

    Visitation at Burns Funeral Home is scheduled for 10 a.m. today (Friday). A graveside eulogy at Pineview Memorial Gardens is planned for 11 a.m.
