Walter “W.S.” Scott Lamb, Sr., 94, died June 30, 2018. W.S. was born Oct. 19, 1923, in Statesboro, Ga., to Gilford Fulton Lamb and Ella Cruise Lamb.
W.S. honorably served our country in the United States Army during World War II as a technical sergeant in the 988th Signal Operations Company.
W.S. started caddying at the age of nine years old, which inspired his love of the sport. He was an avid golfer, winning many tournaments, and was one of the founding members of PG&CC established in 1952.
A football coach took W.S. under his wing in school, which later motivated him to create the first recreation department in Perry. He coached football and baseball for little league teams. W.S. served on the City Council for 12 years, acting as president for six of those years, as well as the Taylor County Development Authority. W.S. and his wife worshiped at United Methodist Church in Perry.
He was known as “Papa” to his grand and great-grandchildren, and was a devout family man. He taught them that family came first and always encouraged them to learn something new every day.
W.S. was preceded in death by: his wife of 63 years, Ovedah; and his parents, Gilford Lamb and Ella Cruise.
He is survived by: his son, Walt Lamb Jr. and daughter-in-law, Deanna Mann Lamb; his grandchildren, Natalie Lamb, Anna Singletary (Jody) and William Lamb (Kristin); his great-grandchildren, Hannah Branum (JC) and Avery Lamb; and his great-great-grandson, Ace Branum; as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, July 5, at 10 a.m., at Pineview Memorial Cemetery with Aquilla Hanson officiating. The family will receive friends from 9-10 a.m., Thursday, July 5, at Joe P. Burns Funeral Home. All arrangements are under the direction of Burns Funeral Home of Perry.
