Dr. Annie L. Guess Fillinger, known to all of her family as Sister, died August 27, 2018, in Live Oak, following a brief illness. She was born on February 18, 1928, in East Port to Raymond S. and Eula B. Guess.
Annie graduated from Florida State University with her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, and with her PhD from the University of Florida. Despite the orange and blue diploma, she continued to bleed garnet and gold for the duration of her life!
She began her teaching career in 1948 and continued in the classroom for 30 years. She then switched her career path to counseling, providing many years of service to elementary school children in Duval County.
In 1998, Annie married the love of her life, Bob Fillinger. They enjoyed life together for 17 years before Bob’s death in 2015. They were active participants in the activities surrounding life at the Advent Christian Village in Dowling Park.
Annie is survived by: one brother, Jim Guess (Martha) of Perry; two nieces, Cindy Mock of Perry and Melinda Pace (Rob) of Tallahassee. She is also survived by a great-nephew, Drew Mock of Perry and his four children; and great-nieces, McKenna Pace of Tallahassee and Bailey Pace of Jacksonville.
Annie was predeceased by: her parents; her husband, Bob; her brother, Jon (Boots); and special “nephew,” Rory Mock.
Funeral services were held in Dowling Park Thursday, Aug. 30. Memorial contributions may be made to the Advent Christian Village, Dowling Park.
