    County dips into reserves to avoid tax hike

    At a special Monday afternoon meeting attended by just five members of the public, county commissioners quickly and quietly adopted a tentative 2018-19 budget – with a 1.4% increase in expenditures – and a millage rate that assesses property owners the same tax rate as the current year.

    Instead of requiring 5% “across-the-board” cuts from all departments and each constitutional officer’s budget, county commissioners opted to balance the budget by requesting all departments cut their budgets by 2.5% and pulling the remaining $342,517 from cash reserves.
