First responders unable to respond to calls once winds reach 45 mph

    Posted on October 10, 2018

Local emergency first responders will not be able to respond to calls once winds reach 45 mph sustained!!

Every one one is urged to evacuate the coast if they have not already done so. Forecasts continue to call for a 6- to 9-foot storm surge along the Taylor County coast. Flooding will continue to grow worse as Hurricane Michael draws closer to landfall and high tide nears.

Wind gusts could reach 70 mph along the coast, while sustained winds are expected to be between 30 and 40 mph. Inland, winds are forecast to reach 20-30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph.

The National Guard is in town, stationed at the Red Cross Shelter at Taylor County Elementary School and participating in activities at the county’s Emergency Operations Center.

About 50 people are currently staying at the shelter, but few are from the local coastline. (In lighter news, a pet mouse brought to the shelter had babies today. Don’t worry, mother and babies are safety in their container.)

According to officials, no one took advantage of the buses stationed in Steinhatchee and Keaton Beach yesterday to transport residents to the shelter in Perry.

Those heading to the shelter are asked to bring pillows and blankets. Snacks will be provided, but no hot meals.
