    ‘Hunter Killer’ is a surprise hit

    After a busy couple of weeks in the lead-up to the Florida Forest Festival, I was in the mood for a movie that wouldn’t make me think or feel too hard. Looking at the available movies, I settled on “Hunter Killer,” a submarine thriller based on the novel “Firing Point” by George Wallace and Don Keith.

    I went into the film with little to no expectations other than it being a below-average action flick with a predictable plot. Instead, “Hunter Killer” is a surprisingly competent military thriller that — despite some technical issues and a few early plot holes — kept me entertained for its perhaps too-long 122-minute runtime.
