I’m going to date myself here, but I remember playing the video game “Wolfenstein 3D” shortly after it was released back in 1992. One of the first immersive first-person shooters, the game had you playing a soldier trying to escape Nazi soldiers during World War II and the supernatural monsters they had created. Two years later, “Doom II” would revolutionize the first-person shooter genre, but “Wolfenstein” has always had a special place in my heart, even though I don’t play video games that often anymore.
So, when I saw the trailer for the new horror/action/war film, “Overlord,” which features Nazis and zombies, it should be no surprise that my mind went back to “Wolfenstein.” It was as if the filmmakers decided to make an adaptation of the video game, but knowing that video game movies are almost always a disappointment, they instead just made a movie with Nazis and zombies, and changed the title.
Regardless of the name, nostalgia was the main reason I went to go see “Overlord,” and I’m glad I did, because this movie is a wild ride of blood, gore and non-stop action.
