Taylor County Sheriff Wayne Padgett is asking school board members for permission to add an additional layer of security by implementing the “Guardian” program, which allows for the vetting and training of certain school personnel to become qualified to carry guns as part of an effort to safeguard schools.
In the wake of the school shooting that claimed the lives of 17 people one year ago in Parkland, state lawmakers passed the “Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act,” which included new gun laws, $400 million in funding for firearm and school safety, as well as community mental health resources.
