After the success of “Rango,” which is actually the fourth highest grossing Western of all time, it’s not terribly surprising director Gore Verbinski decided to stay in the genre, re-teaming with Bruckheimer and Depp for a remake of the classic Western hero, “The Lone Ranger.”
Although Western purists and most old-school “Lone Ranger” fans will probably give a resounding “no,” Verbinski’s “The Lone Ranger” delivers pretty much what I would expect from one of his movies, the aforementioned madcap action on a grand scale. It perhaps plays a little too true to form with Depp playing an rather insane version of Tonto, greedy villains looking for buried treasure (in this case, silver rather than gold) and a bevy of background characters and settings bordering on the macabre.
“The Lone Ranger” is definitely not for everyone, but fans of the “Pirates” movies looking for something a bit different yet familiar might want to check this one out.
The movie is rated PG-13 for sequences of intense action and violence, and some suggestive material.
