Review: Gru and the minions are back for chaos in ‘Despicable Me 2’

2013-07-12-Despicable-Me-2-movie-posterTurning the superhero genre on its head, 2010’s “Despicable Me” follows the super-villain Gru (voiced by Steve Carrell), who adopts three little girls as part of his latest dastardly plan, but finds his heart warming to the rambunctious trio.

Now we have “Despicable Me 2,” which continues Gru’s misadventures in parenthood and his attempt to find success in a post-villainy career. Most of the elements which made the first film so fun are present and accounted for, although it’s hard to surprise audiences twice.

The characters we met in the original film are more than enough to carry this sequel to humorous success–and they do–but there are a few too many things going on in the story for it to garner the same level of heart. All in all, “Despicable Me 2” is an enjoyable film, but as good as the first movie was, I was hoping for a bit more.

The film is rated PG for rude humor and mild action.
