Since 2016, the Taylor County Commission has been working toward utilizing at least some of its $14 million in RESTORE Act funds to expand access to the Gulf of Mexico by acquiring land and constructing one or more new boat ramps.
However, those efforts came to an abrupt halt Tuesday night when a divided commission voted against submitting two grant applications that would have funded feasibility studies on two of the county’s top-ranked sites. County staff had been working on the grant applications since February, when the commission ranked the state-owned Hagen’s Cove and a 25-acre parcel owned by Dr. Kenneth Hutchins as their top two priorities for possible sites for new boat ramps.
