Halloween has a 2,000-year-old history steeped in superstition, including the belief the day marked the transition from summer to winter, when the barrier between the world of the living and the afterlife becomes blurred and those who are long-dead draw near.
The ghosts and ghouls of Halloween night are a reminder of the holiday’s dark origins in ancient Celtic history, when Oct. 31 was believed to be the night when the dead returned to earth.
