Review: After a disastrous first attempt, we now have a good ‘Wolverine’ film

Despite the fact that it follows a failure of a movie and bases its backstory on “X-Men: The Last Stand,” which is only slightly better liked by fans, “The Wolverine” manages to create the kind of movie I think we always knew the character was capable of delivering. While not perfect, it presents the best aspects of the Wolverine while taking a rather serious look at the downsides of immortality.

The story, from writers Mark Bomback (“Total Recall”) and Scott Frank (“Minority Report”), is overly convoluted, but it makes internal sense at the end of the day. There are several inconsistencies with the franchise as a whole, but like in “X-Men: First Class,” they can be ignored for the most part since the film itself works well enough.

“The Wolverine” has its issues, but ultimately it is the movie fans have been waiting for ever since the disappointment of the character’s last movie.

The film is rated PG-13 for sequences of intense sci-fi action and violence, some sexuality and language.
