    430-acres burned for fire mitigation

    Florida Forest Service members used ground fuel ignition devices (shown above) to spread fire along the ground in a swift, efficient and safe manner. It has a pivoting arm that can swing over the right or left side to disperse fire. It uses a gasoline and diesel mixture that ignites reliably but burns slowly, allowing fire to ignite on the ground fuels.

    Wading through thick brush, ground crews from the Florida Forest Service’s (FFS) Perry District spit fire from drip torches as they set more than 400 acres ablaze Wednesday.

    The low-lying ground fires were set on private property located near the corner of Puckett Road and Golf Course Road as part of a coordinated prescribed burn of 430 acres.
