Margaret McGrew (center) with her children (left to right) Tammy, John Jr., Jonathan, Lesia, Debra, Elaine and Tekeema. One daughter, Blanche, died in 2013. Margaret’s family threw her a surprise party for her 70th birthday — a surprise that was nearly ruined when some people who were not invited to the party called her to apologize for not being able to attend. “She asked us, ‘What party?’ So much for the surprise!” daughter Debra recalled.

Car or no car, when Sunday morning came, it was time to go to church.

So, Margaret Williamson McGrew would get her children ready and off they would go – walking to church.

“There were up to six of us at home at one time. Two more children were born after I left home. She raised us to be close and didn’t let other people watch us. Wherever she went, we went,” daughter Debra McGrew said. “My mom is the best mom in the world.”
