The world was fading from grey to black when Bill Murray heard someone say, “I’m ready to intubate.”

He immediately began struggling, shaking his head “no.”

“You’re turning blue – you are blue, very blue. We have to,” the doctor said.

“Quick, call Hollywood – this may be my only chance at stardom, my only chance to be a Smurf,” Murray responded.

“He has a sense of humor, so his mind is working,” the doctor said, deciding to hold off on the intubation.

The moment of levity was an all-too-brief interlude in what would prove to be a harrowing battle to near death for the veteran Perry Police Department (PPD) officer.
