    Reboots and Recounts

    Posted on August 21, 2020

Election officials and members of the Canvassing Board found themselves sorting more than 2,000 ballots by hand just before the clock struck midnight Tuesday. Issues with a voting machine not booting up to read a memory card led to a stack of the wrong ballots being counted, which prompted more than four additional hours of work.

What started out as a relatively normal election night Tuesday turned out to be anything but, leaving local candidates waiting hours for the final unofficial results as elections staff working into the early-morning hours.

According to Supervisor of Elections Dana Southerland, the problems began with a memory card failure, but that was compounded by human error as she and her staff hastily attempted to overcome the original issue.
