Through the multiple false starts we had in July and early August over whether or not movie theaters would re-open, one thing remained static. Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” was poised to be the first big-budget film to welcome back movie-goers.
That seemed perfect considering Nolan’s career-long advocation for the theater-going experience, especially with his embrace of the super-large IMAX format.
However, when theaters finally re-opened on a large scale beginning on the weekend of Aug. 28, it was not “Tenet” that greeted movie-goers, but instead “The New Mutants.”
I’m actually glad it worked out that way, because if you read my review of “The New Mutants” last week, you know that I wasn’t overly impressed with the movie, despite how much I enjoyed the fact that I was able to return to a movie theater for the first time in almost six months.
Why was I happy to see a mediocre movie? Well, because it proved to me that my thrill at being back in a movie theater hadn’t clouded my objectivity. I could still deliver a less-than-positive review.
I’m happy with that, because I thoroughly enjoyed “Tenet,” and while I do think your entertainment level might vary depending on how much you like being challenged by your movies, I truly believe this will go down as yet another excellent film in Nolan’s growing collection of films.
