Some movies, on paper at least, look like a surefire win. But that is definitely not always the case.
For example, take “Ava,” which made its debut on video-on-demand (VOD) last weekend. It looked like one of those “can’t miss” movies. It has a stellar cast, including Jessica Chastain (“The Martian”), Colin Farrell (“The Gentlemen”), John Malkovich (“Mile 22”), Geena Davis (“Thelma & Louise”) and Common (“John Wick 2”). It’s director, Tate Taylor, has helmed several well-received films, including “The Help” and “Ma.”
Unfortunately, none of these pieces come together to form anything resembling a good movie, or even an entertaining one. In fact, this may be one of the most boring movies I’ve ever seen about an assassin, and I’m saying that as someone who enjoyed the extremely slow-paced “The American” back in 2010.
