Taylor County surpassed 1,700 positive coronavirus (COVID-19) cases during the first 10 days of December, reporting 64 new cases in that time frame, including three additional hospitalizations and one death.
According to the Department of Health (DOH) dashboard, Taylor County’s total number of positive cases since the virus began was 1,713 as of press time Thursday, Dec. 10.
Those hospitalized had increased by three to 71 total, and 22 people who previously tested positive for COVID-19 have died.
Of those who have died, 81 percent (or 18 individuals) were 65 years of age or older. Taylor County has reported just four deaths in people under the age of 65.
The local hospitalization and death rates continue to fall below the state average by one percent each. Taylor County’s hospitalization rate is four percent, while the state’s is five percent. Similarly, the county’s death rate is one percent, while the Florida is at two percent.
The same cannot be said for Taylor County’s correctional-related cases.
Based on the DOH dashboard, 44 percent (748) of Taylor’s cases were related to correctional institutions, while the state’s correctional case mix is just two percent.
