Taylor County’s Department of Health (DOH-Taylor) is holding a mass COVID-19 vaccination event today (Wednesday, Jan. 13) at Forest Capital Hall for local healthcare workers and senior citizens (ages 65 and up).
“We are simply moving our location from the health department to Forest Capital Hall so that we can accommodate more people in one day.
By the end of the day, we will have vaccinated 420 people. This will bring our total (number of vaccinations) in the community to 1,000,” said DOH-Taylor Public Information Officer Martine Young.
Appointments are required, and the schedule is currently filled.
“We are working off the waiting list if anything becomes available. Our first client is scheduled for 9 a.m.,” she said.
The expanded vaccination effort comes as Taylor County’s reported coronavirus (COVID-19) cases jumped by 128 in the past week.
According to figures from the Florida Department of Health (DOH), Taylor County’s total number of reported cases had risen to 2,160 by Tuesday, Jan. 12 (the most recent day for which data is available).
Based on the county’s estimated total population of 21,569 people, nearly 10% of Taylor County residents have now tested positive for the virus since the first case was reported in April 2020.
To date, there have been 83 hospitalizations (4% of all cases) and 28 deaths (1% of all cases) in Taylor County.
As of press time Tuesday, 555 individuals had received the first dose of the Moderna COVID vaccine, and one person had completed the two-part series of the vaccine.
