200 more to get COVID vaccine

    Posted on January 22, 2021

In a race against coronavirus, Taylor County’s Department of Health (DOH-Taylor) is holding a mass COVID-19 vaccination event today (Friday) at the local health department.

Some 200 doses of the Moderna vaccine will be given by appointment only at 1215 North Peacock Ave in Perry.

The appointments for today’s vaccination clinic were made based on a waiting list of more than 3,000 names.

“We are still taking names for the list from those age 65 or older or healthcare workers,” DOH-Taylor Operations Manager Martine Young said.

To be placed on the waiting list, residents may call the DOH-Taylor office (850-584-5087, option 2) or fill out the online form at http://taylor.floridahealth.gov/.

Based on the latest vaccination figures from the Florida Department of Health, 1,142 people in Taylor County have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, representing approximately 5.2% of the county’s total population.

Of the vaccines administered by DOH-Taylor, 1,005 (88%) have been to individuals who are 65 years of age or older.

The vaccination efforts have been ongoing since the end of December when the Moderna vaccine became available in more rural locations, such as Taylor County.

However, local numbers have climbed as Taylor County appears to be enduring the worst month yet of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Locally, the area has posted weekly highs of more than 120 new coronavirus cases each week.

As of press time Thursday, Taylor County had logged a total of 2,327 coronavirus cases — up 47 in two days.

Additionally, two more people who previously tested positive had died, bringing the county’s total to 32.
