In the wake of “learning losses” associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, nearly one in every four students – a total of 615 students or 22% of all those enrolled in the Taylor County School District – have a failing grade, have scored in the lowest quartile at the elementary level or need to recover one or more credits at the high school level.
In an attempt to mitigate these broad learning losses – attributed to a lost semester of instruction during the 2020 school year and COVID-related disruptions in 2020 — the local school district is undertaking the largest summer school program in decades with a projected cost of around $500,000 to fund some 50 teachers and the half dozen bus drivers likely needed during the month of June.
