2 new positions among $500,000 cut from budget, but $150,000 in raises preserved

Despite voting 4-0 to adopt a slightly lower property tax millage rate (6.5473 mills instead of the current year’s 6.6744 mills), the city council’s 2021-22 millage rate is considered a property tax increase because it did not adopt the ad valorem tax “roll-back rate” – a lower rate that would have generated the same amount of taxes as the current year.

While the city council gave tentative approval to a slightly lower tax rate, that lower rate is still expected to generate an additional $86,000 due to an overall increase in the assessed value of real and tangible property within the city limits.
