Edgar Writer is one of the more eclectic filmmakers working today, producing the zombie comedy “Shaun of the Dead,” the video-game inspired “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” the musically-infused crime thriller “Baby Driver” and the documentary “The Sparks Brothers.”
His latest film is “Last Night in Soho,” which brings him back to the horror genre, but unlike the aforementioned “Shaun of the Dead” or the pub-crawl-meets-alien-invasion flick “The World’s End,” he leaves the comedy behind this time for a straight-up thriller.
Although this is once again something new for him, Wright still manages to infuse the movie with a lot of style, both visually and with the storytelling, while also pumping in plenty of great music. Although the special effects don’t always hold up, the darker story materials keeps the tension extremely tight all the way until the end.
