Tree giveaway & chili lunch Jan. 21 at Grand Pavilion

    Posted on January 21, 2022

In conjunction with Arbor Day – which is celebrated in Florida the third Friday in January – Taylor County’s Master Gardeners is teaming with the Perry Garden Club for a tree giveaway and chili lunch event today (Friday, Jan. 21) at Rosehead Park’s Grand Pavilion (located next to the splash pad on Jefferson Street).

Stop by the pavilion to receive your choice of a free sapling from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and enjoy a cup of chili with proceeds from the chili lunch benefiting the garden club.

Arbor Day is a nationally-celebrated observance that promotes the benefits of trees in the urban environment and encourages tree planting and care.

Florida is the first state to celebrate Arbor Day each year (along with Louisiana), on the third Friday of January.

Florida celebrates Arbor Day in January because many trees are dormant and lose less water through transpiration (evaporation of water from leaves) this time of year, making them easier to transplant without putting them through too much stress.

The cabbage palm is Florida’s State Tree and is featured on the seal of Florida’s State flag.

    Remember when planting trees:

    • Even the healthiest trees planted in the most ideal circumstances need a substantial amount of time, care and particularly, proper irrigation to become established in the landscape.

    • Tree establishment will occur more rapidly when irrigation is supplied in correct quantity and frequency.
