‘Copshop’ is a funny, violent movie with wild characters, sharp dialogue

Back in September, just as we were seeing the COVID-19 Delta surge begin to wind down, a nondescript action film hit theaters called “Copshop.” Other than the cast, which included Gerard Butler (“Olympus Has Fallen”) and Frank Grillo (“Boss Level”), I honestly didn’t give it much thought.

It didn’t help that the movie totally bombed, producing the second-lowest debut weekend ever for a film that opened in more than 3,000 theaters.

That would have been the end of it for me, but an online movie reviewer I generally trust gave it surprisingly high marks. I ultimately still forgot about it, at least until that same reviewer recently released his Top 10 of 2021, and “Copshop” made the cut.

Considering I was already in a bit of a catch-up mode with not much interesting hitting theaters (not to mention the new COVID surge to worry about), I figured I would give “Copshop” a try. The film is available for online rental and purchase, as well as on home video.

If you’re expecting a mindless shoot ‘em up action movie set in a police station, this is not it, although by the end, there are plenty of shoot-outs in a police station. Considering this is from the writer and director “Smokin’ Aces” and “Boss Level,” that’s not really a surprise. Suffice it to say, the dialogue and character interplay is just as entertaining as the action.
