Review: ‘Gravity’ is terrifying, beautiful and could be the best movie of the year

Having now seen “Gravity,” I can say it is hands down the best movie I’ve seen in 2013, both a compelling and gripping story of survival in the harshest environment imaginable, and a technological marvel that pushes what we think is possible when it comes to film-making a giant leap forward. Last year, I called “Life of Pi,” another special effects-heavy project from a top-notch director, one of the visually beautiful films I’ve seen. I still stand by that, but I can also say “Gravity” is one of the visually stunning movies I’ve seen.

Like “Life of Pi” before it, “Gravity” proves that in the right hands, 3-D can be more than a gimmick and a chance to charge more for tickets, and can truly enhance the movie going experience.

“Gravity” is a movie that I can recommend without reservations to just about anybody who loves to go to the movies as well as anybody who has looked at at the sky and wondered what it would be like to be up there looking back. (My one caveat is that the film does include a smattering of adult language and one rather disturbing image that may be a bit intense for younger audiences.) Just be sure to see it in a theater, because this is one film made to be seen larger than life.

“Gravity” is rated PG-13 for intense perilous sequences, some disturbing images and brief strong language.
