Taylor County Marine and Natural Resources Extension Agent Victor Blanco will host a free workshop, “Try Scuba Diving for People with Disabilities,” Saturday, May 27, in Steinhatchee.
“The University of Florida’s IFAS Extension and Taylor County sponsored my certification as a Handicapped Scuba Association (HSA) Instructor at the end of 2022 so we can provide services to underserved groups in our community and work in our diversity and inclusion policy. The activity is open for all types of disabilities, including PTSD, wounded veterans, amputees, paraplegics, those on the autism spectrum and many others,” Blanco said.
“We will serve two participants per hour, starting at 10 a.m. through 4 p.m. The activity will be held at the Piddlers Pointe RV Resort and Park in Steinhatchee.
“Interested participants may contact me to schedule their hour time slot and provide information for their needs. Any participant’s companions are welcome to join the activity in the pool and try scuba themselves,” he said.
“Scuba diving is known to help overcome barriers for most disabilities. It helps to move the body more naturally. Some divers with disabilities report it helps them relieve the pain, so it has physical and emotional therapeutic effects,” Blanco said.
Free registration is available by contacting Blanco at the Taylor County Extension Office, (850) 838-3508 or e-mail victorblancomar@ufl.edu.
