Atlantic hurricane season officially underway; will run through Nov. 30

Just as the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season officially began Thursday, an area of low pressure in the Gulf of Mexico developed the potential to become the first tropical system of the season — although it was forecast to be short-lived.
