Review: Disney has a another hit in the snow-covered ‘Frozen’

Disney is trying to keep its winning streak alive with “Frozen,” its latest animation offering inspired by the Hans Christian Andersen story, “The Snow Queen.”

While I wouldn’t put this latest feature on quite the same level of “Tangled” or “Wreck-It Ralph,” “Frozen” is a fun adventure with endearing characters, catchy songs and a poignant story with enough twists on the usual formula to keep the audience on their toes.

I’ve mentioned it before, but 2013 has not been a stellar year for animation, and “Frozen,” this year’s last major release, finds itself at the top of the domestic releases, in my opinion, and will most likely provide Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki’s reported final film, “The Wind Rises,” its biggest competition when award season arrives.

“Frozen” tells the story of two sisters, the elder Elsa (Idina Menzel, “Enchanted”) and the younger Anna (Kristen Bell, “Gossip Girl”), both princesses in the kingdom of Arendelle. Elsa is special, possessing the ability to control ice and snow, but after an accident which almost kills Anna, her parents make her promise to keep it a secret from everyone, including her sister.

The film is rated PG for some action and mild rude humor.
