    When first approached with the idea of a Veterans Memorial Park being built here, Ed Sheffield simply said, ‘I’ll do anything you need me to do.” He took the lead in fundraising and was also hands-on in its construction.

    Doctors and nurses lined the hallway to pay their final respects to an American hero passing by in a flag-draped coffin, as his wife of 70 years was overcome with competing emotions of grief and awe by the touching tribute.

    The stirring sound of “Taps” being played from a solitary bugle lingered in the air as the coffin passed out of sight.

    Due to mounting health issues, Staff Sgt. Ed Sheffield had called the VA in Lake City home for the past several years, but during that time he never “raised a fuss” or even asked for help when he needed it, according to his wife, Jamie, who added, “He didn’t want to bother anyone.”

    It was that humble spirit that endeared him to all those who came in contact with him during his extended stay, and it was those same men and women who lined the hallway to say a final farewell on the morning of Saturday, July 20.

    Sheffield was 94.
