Carlton, 99, leaves behind legacy of public service and friendships

    Posted on January 10, 2025

Former Taylor County Clerk of Court Ralph Carlton retired from public service in 1988 after serving seven consecutive terms, but returned to work alongside the late Annie Mae Murphy shortly after her election in 1992. He is shown above at the time of his second retirement in December 2017. Carlton died Monday, Jan. 6, 2025, just four days shy of celebrating his 100th birthday.

They say the mark of a true gentleman is one who puts more into the world than he takes out.

Ralph Carlton embodied that principle for nearly a century.

A true Taylor County gentleman who left his mark not only in service to his community — serving seven decades in the Clerk of Courts office — but also in the lives of those who loved him and called him both friend and family.
